“Free pizza at tonight’s LGBTQ student alliance meeting! 8 to 9 p.m. on the fourth floor of the student center. Wanna come?”

I stopped short in the middle of the sidewalk and the guy waving the flyer in my face grinned at me. His shaggy black hair was falling into his eyes but I could still see the twinkle in them. And dammit, it was a cute twinkle.

“Come on, you know you want it,” Twinkles said.

I froze, considering my options. The fact was, I did want the free pizza. I’d come to the college campus in search of free food like I did most days when I wasn’t working at Al’s Diner in town. Al’s didn’t pay me nearly enough to afford groceries, so on days when I couldn’t take scraps from their kitchen home with me, I came here and scrounged for free food. But if I went to the meeting…

“Can I come, even if I’m not, you know—”

“L, G, B, T, or Q,” said the other student, sitting behind the table where the Alliance’s poster was prominently displayed. He was tossing a tennis ball back and forth in his hands and his dark skin and short hair made him look like Michael B. Jordan. Except hotter, if that was possible.

“Uh, yeah,” I managed to stutter. “Something like that.”

That wasn’t, actually, what I’d meant, but I didn’t actually want to finish my sentence so I let it lie. Twinkles looked back at Michael and they laughed. I wondered if they were laughing at me. Then I decided I didn’t care. They were hot and they were talking to me. Who was I to complain?

“Sure,” Twinkles said. “You can come. There’s always room for allies. Plus, you know, pizza.”

I finally took the flyer he was waggling at me and gave it a once over. I knew that groups like this existed at colleges around the country, but somehow, seeing one for the first time was making my stomach feel all nervous and bubbly. Though that could also have been due to the hotness factor that Twinkles and Michael were bringing to the table. I definitely hadn’t expected an LGBTQ student club to have students who were quite so attractive.

I looked up and saw that Michael and Twinkles were still looking at me. My face flushed. Could they tell what I’d been thinking?

“It’s not that I’m not, but, um, it’s kinda hard to explain,” I finished lamely. They didn’t want to listen to my story. I wasn’t even sure why they were still spending so much time talking to me. Plenty of other people had been passing us on this same stretch of sidewalk but neither guy had made a move to hand out any more flyers.

“Tell us tonight,” Michael said. He stood up and held out his hand. “I’m Trey, by the way.”

“Trey,” I repeated as I walked over to shake his hand. So, not Michael after all. Not that it mattered. A rose by any other name is just as hot, I thought to myself.
